Counter-Strike: Heaton to CGS
By: Jonas Alsaker Vikan - Published September 07, 2007 at 9:35 PM EDT - Writer Archive
There were a number of great candidates for the position of General Manager for Stockholm. In the end the most well known, most merited star of them all got the job. Jonas "bsl" Alsaker Vikan speaks with the new CGS General Manager.
Many fans shed their nostalgic tears when Counter-Strike’s original star, Emil “HeatoN” Christensen, hung up his mouse and went into retirement a short month ago. “HeatoN” was vocal, much like Jonathon “Fatal1ty” Wendell, of his desire to turn his gaming career into a life-long job, and so today, he’s back in the spotlight as The Championship Gaming Series’ General Manager for his native city of Stockholm.
You recently stepped down from a playing career most words would fail to describe. What are your thoughts on your new career as a manager?
I am really excited about being the General Manager for Stockholm. It feels like a natural step for me since I have been in the gaming scene for so long. I have so much experience I can help provide others the benefit of.
During your career you were dubbed "The one and only." However, managing and leading a team is new to you - what kind of personal qualities do you bring to such a demanding job?
I think that one of my best personal qualities is that I am highly motivated, and that I am able to see the positive side of things even in the worst situations. I always try to bring out the best in people, both in and outside of the game. That is something I hope can contribute to make the Stockholm team successful. I also think one of my main qualities is that I have a lot of experience in seeing the potential in players, for instance in various line-ups of NiP.
- Christensen never received much praise for it but his faith in unknown players like Marcus Sundström and Oskar Holm ultimately culminated with the in-game superstars we know by their nicknames “zet” and “ins.” Sundström is already a CGS franchise player with Complexity while Holm competes for Fnatic in the CS: 1.6 scene.-bsl
When were you approached with this offer? Were you considering leaving the gaming scene altogether after stepping down from your role as a player in NiP?
I was approached a couple of weeks back after I announced that I would start working full time with the management in NiP. I never considered leaving the scene, I have been involved with it for a large portion of my life and it has given me so much. It would be very difficult to let that go just like that.
Have you begun scouting potential franchise players in preparation for the upcoming events in the UK?
I have been keeping a close eye on FIFA and CS: Source. It’s more difficult to follow Dead or Alive and Project Gotham Racing.
What does it take to be signed to HeatoN’s team?
Motivation, confidence and a huge hunger for victory.
- As Emil “HeatoN” Christensen signs on the dotted line the CGS’ GM tally for Europe comes to three out of four. Berlin is the only city lacking a GM and odds are that will be announced sometime this week.
Meanwhile European forums are sure to go crazy with speculation as to the identity of the last General Manager.
